Your Business Is Busy. So Are the Hackers. Update Windows.

Windows always seems to ask for a restart when you have an invoice to finish and a customer waiting. Clicking “remind me later” is tempting. But “later” should not become your business’s security plan.

You do not need to understand every technical detail below. Your IT team should. The key takeaways are simple: keep Windows updated, complete required restarts, and use multiple layers of protection. Why Windows security updates matter

Microsoft’s October 2026 security updates fixed a Windows weakness called CVE-2026-96951. It allowed attackers to bypass a Windows security protection. Microsoft confirmed criminals were already exploiting it before the patch was released. Microsoft’s security announcement

What if your computer is already compromised?

A patch fixes a weakness. It does not necessarily remove an attacker who has already gained access. Think of repairing a broken lock. You still need to check whether someone got inside.

Being vulnerable does not automatically mean your computer was compromised. But if there are signs of a break-in, installing updates alone is not enough. Your IT team needs to investigate and address any remaining access or damage.

This is why your business needs multiple layers of protection, set up and maintained properly.

For example, imagine an employee opens a fake supplier invoice. Your email protection might block it first. If it gets through, security software on the computer may detect what it tries to do. Limiting employee permissions can reduce the damage. Monitoring can help your IT team spot trouble, and tested backups can help restore your files.

Each layer has a job. None catches everything. And backups are not much comfort if nobody has checked that they work.

AI makes timely patching more important

AI adds urgency. Google’s researchers have documented attackers using AI to assist with exploiting software weaknesses. This does not establish AI involvement in the Windows flaw above, but it shows how criminals can speed up parts of their work. Four practical security checks for your business

  1. Finish the updates. Your payroll computer may have downloaded a fix but still need a restart. Downloaded is not done.
  2. Assign responsibility. Someone should confirm every business computer is updated, including spare and remote laptops.
  3. Check Windows support. Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving regular updates on October 13, 2026. A computer that still works may need a newer supported version. Microsoft’s Windows message center
  4. Check the other defenses. Ask your IT provider about email protection, account security, monitoring, and tested backups.
